The article deals with an interesting field of material structure investigation by means of X-ray diffraction. After a brief introduction mentioning big names of this field, basic conceptions of solid state structure and X-ray radiation are presented. The core is formed by two areas of structure analysis: the application of diffraction in material science and engineering during the development of new progressive materials of made-to-measure properties, and the use of diffraction in an attractive environment of protein crystallography.
